Which ATTENUATOR is the best for tube Marshall 100w with 4x12 Celestian 25w Greenback cab?
Hot Plate? Weber? Something else better? Which one and why?
Thanks!! |

Sorry, but I'm not the man to ask! I've never owned an attenuator. If Owwdatune comes through here, he'll know. ~T~!!! Are you out there?
I've just gone to smaller amps so I don't need an attenuator. |

Welcome to the forum! I'm not the man to ask on this, either. I have also never used one, and I am not a fan of Marshall amps. You might check in over at Amptalk.com , I believe there is a thread about this over there, Owwdatune moderates that forum and he checks in there every day. |

its not a question of which is best for what brand of amp----they work the same on any brand tube amp......in my opinion tho, owwda the better ones out there..i feel the Weber Mass (or one of its little brothers-depending on what you want) would be the best bang for your buck---the design will best replicate your tone at the lower volumes than the others IMO......go to the weber site & read up about it.----next choice might be the Dr Z . |

I have experimented with Attenuators and Marshall (JTM45 RI) amps. I will tell you this, ALL of them suck tone.
Of the ones I tried, THD Hot Plate, Weber MASS, Marshall Powerbreak and a couple others not even worth mentioning their names, I would say the one I like most was the Marshall Powerbreak. |

Thank you all! I'll post at Amptalk and I'll check suggested Dr.Z. My amp 100w, I think I should go for 150w att. to have some room. Weber's Motor speaker design sounds promising.
Thanks everybody, r'n'r! |

Did you try them with Treble Booster in front or without it?
I tried Marshall Power soak and it was not fun at all. But I did not use Treble Booster yet.... |

Right. It is all complicated. I was told that to get tone I like, I should use one (Tr.B.) into Marshall. Classic tone, classic (Brit) sound was discovered when guys tried make Brit amps sound more like Americans, using treble boosters.
They ended up having quite a tone, which you can't get by turning highs lower on American amp... or whatever. AC 30 Vox that's another amp to use with Tr.B. I heard, but I own Marshall, which is dark sounding amp too.
Now, if I'll do that, I have to turn my amp up really high.
I hope attenuator would help me to keep local population away from my door without killing all resulting tone.
Oh, man...

Is your speaker cabinet open or closed back? If it is closed back, is it in one piece or multiple pieces?
My Marshall was dark sounding. My cabinet had a multiple piece back, I removed 2 of the 3 panels and it brightened up |

It is all about getting tone, not about getting highs.
Well! It is closed. 4x12 Celestions Greenback 25w, vintage reissue.
I'm thinking I should not do anything to it, and I like the way it sounds.
I'm just hoping using pedals/gadgets I can add to what I can record and play.
Or I might try different cab. Still, pedals are smaller, easier to have them around....
Thanks! |

Last time I checked Brightness and Darkness had something to do with tone.
Open and closed back cabinets do affect the tone. I learned this from several amp builders. That is why a lot of boutique amp builders have cabinets with convertible backs.
Running a 100w amp through a closed back 4x12 in a small area (livingroom, bedroom) will make your tone darker (more bassy) which is why you feel the need to add treble. |

Chet, you are right!
I hear you and I'll use your advice, thanks!
I'm just hoping that pedal and attenuator would save me from going to rehearsal rooms every time I wanna play. (And I want dial into Classic Rock tone somehow, so I was told'bout Dallas Rangemaster - hard to find and it is $1000+)
I have also Guitar Rig, Line6 and Mac, I might use them. It is just not the same I guess. I'll try tweekin' 'em anyway.
Thanks, man! |

Pedals and Attenuators don't always solve those problems. I have been chasing "The Tone" for years, different amps, different speakers, different guitars, different pedals, etc., spending good money on things that did not get me close to where I wanted to be.
Tell us more about your current setup, What guitar/s do you use?, Pickups?, Pedals?, Strings, etc. |
