| I just saw the Beatles '64 Tribute concert in Austin a couple nights ago. It was great. I've been interested in that John Lennon acoustic that Epiphone has out. It's pretty cool. Now I really want one. Dang, acoustic GAS. Anyway, that guitar has a single coil pick-up at the neck. Wow, you could really tell it was a single coil pick-up. It didn't sound like a nice smooth acoustic. It really had a bite to it. "John" used it on quite a few songs during the show. Has anyone played one of these? I know Gibson has their model too, but the Epi is way less expensive, of course. |

Johns Gibson J-165E (and Georges...) were purchased i 1964 and build from solid mahogany back and sides and laminated spruce top (strange - but true). Later I think Gibson went to an all solid construction and later to an all laminated construction. It was always considered an electric guitar by Gibson and therefore not too much attention was put to the acoustic qualities - but even so most Beatles recordings with these Gibsons are recorded like acoustics with Neumann microphones - and not as electric guitars. Anyway - a famous Beatles recording with J-165E plugged in as electric guitar (probably into a Vox) is "I feel Fine" - startin' with one of the J-165E feeding the A-string back... a classic moment in rock'n'roll
The Epi j-165E-clones are all laminated construction and perhaps therefore best as electric guitars... The acoustic qualities are lacking too much for acoustic playing.
I think that no matter what type of guitars Beatles played - they sounded tremendously. Even the ice picking Gretsches sounds wonderfull and so does the SG and LPs a few years later... |

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I've noticed from reading your posts that both of you are Beatle fans. Add me to that list.
I was 10 years old in 1963, and hearing them for the first time changed my life forever. I had discovered music that I liked hearing motown on my little am radio, but Elvis really did nothing for me. When I heard the Beatles, it was a revelation. I knew right then I wanted to play the guitar, and I lived, ate, and breathed that music. I drove my parents crazy listening to the same 45's over and over.
I miss George tremendously. As much as I like the others, I guess the fact that he was the lead guitar player, and didn't seem to have the ego that John and Paul could at times display, just drew me to the "quiet Beatle"
I've owned the Beatle Anthology vids since their release, but the DVD set is worth buying for the last disc alone. You see the three of them just fooling around and jamming a bit, and it's just so great to see them together.
When Paul talks about sitting with George in his final days, and just sitting and holding his hand for an hour, I cry like a little girl. But that man died with dignity. There's a touching clip of his last recorded performance, a visit to the MTV studio's with an interview, and the song he chooses to play chokes me up as well...All Things Must Pass.
When asked my favorite bands, I often forget to mention the Beatles...because I hold them in such high regard that I put them in a catagory all by themselves.
I'm so glad that I lived thru that period, as there will never be another..
Sorry to interupt the Epi discussion.. |

| No hijack. It wasn't doing much anyway. I was too young in their heyday, but I caught up as I grew up. If I had to listen to only one group for the rest of my life, it would be The Beatles. |

Yah mon, I don't mind taking an off ramp for some Beatles discussion now and then. They were a big part of my musical upbringing, and I appreciated them for all they gave us. I realize that they weren't the most talented musicians in the world, but what they put together using what they had was very impressive, and has stood the test of time. |

| I've dug listening to virtuosos in various styles over the years, but melody is everything, and the Beatles had it. |
