Any of you Gibby folks ever heard of OLD celluloid binding auto-igniting or spontaneoulsy combusting? It seems that I read of this a long time ago, maybe in FRETS Magazine, but cannot find the reference. I think that it involved guitars that had been stored away for a long time, like grampa's old guitar found in the attic or in a closet still in the case. If you have, do you have a reference? Thanks a lot.

I've never heard of that, but I have heard of "binding rot" where the binding disintegrates by giving off a chemical vapor that was an integral part of the "glue" that held the binding together. This vapor is flamable; and I would think the "spontaneous combustion" was more likely caused by someone with a lit cigarette opening a case full of these fumes. This is my opinion, I have no facts to prove it wrong. If someone else does, then have at it! |

Thanks for your input Herb. I guess I need to dig out my FRETS magazines and start going through them. I think that that is where I read this.
