Just asking: Have you check the neck relief yet? It should about 1/16" at the 5th fret while holding the string down at the 1st and 12th frets. Before making any adjustments, check that first. If it is more than 1/16" you can tighten the rod just a bit and recheck. Go in baby steps. If it is about the right relief, than start lowering the bridge. Go in baby steps. You can go as low as you want...until you here a string buzz. Then go back up a bit. This is somewhere between 3/64" and 5/64". Each guitar will be a little different and everyone likes the action a little different too.

You need to tell them all you need is a neck adjustment, you do not need fretwork or a dress and polish. This should fall between the $25 and $50 range and take them all of 30 minutes at the most. That store is guilty (as far too many of them are anymore) of trying to sell what you don't need. And you will also find that most stores that do this are also staffed with non-competent techs.
Dead on Herb! My luthier only charges me $25 to set up any guitar I bring in to her.
Google "FretNot Guitar Repair" to check out her work & awesome info too!
Shame so many sharks in the water just waiting to bite!
