I recently traded my old identity and property for new guitars?
Thought I'd start with an SG because I miss my old ones. I find that the REAL THING fits nicely on my lap and comes to me with all the right angles and geometry. I bought a brand new worn Yellow Deluxe. Pretty basic.
It took a little while to get used to the strange finish, but all the familiar features and feelings are there. It's got 490R and 490T pickups, which I believe matches my Lucille. It sounds pretty good too right out of the box.
It is my intention to swap in at least 2 sets of my own spec pickups, which resemble Burstbuckers, but they're called Tonebursts, are wax -potted, and have higher value bridge pickups. I have 6 sets of humbuckers altogether, but won't be needing them all in this one, and might eventually end up with full size extra-punch P90's.
I'll need coil splitting too, as long as I have some type of buckers in it, to match what the PRS does, exactly. I think that if & when I get Mean 90's in it, it will just be a flat out killer.
I'm playing mostly through an old Fender 6W Vibro Champ and it sounds beautiful. It's not breaking up out of control, and getting all distorted as I feared. The single coils, as in Tele & stRATS are just a tad cleaner of course, at lower volumes.
Since I've finally decided that I no longer need my old flamestich couch, I have another Flametop??? on it's way, waiting for the UPS truck next week! Supreme. |

Congratulations, Dwight! Enjoy that SG, they can make very nice test beds for pickup swapping because they are very easy to work on.
If I remember right, the Lucilles come stock with 490 and 498 pickups.
Stay tuned,

Thank you. That's exactly what it will become, a test bed.
I'll give Gibson a call about little quality issues not worth mentioning, but they need to know and be on their toes, and I want to clear up the Lucille question once and for all.
Do they actually break in half? No sorry, that's not the question. I thought they had 490/498's till I read an old catalogue, and was surprised that they said 2 - 490's along with Howard Roberts Fusion III and our own ES-165 Herb Ellis?
Must be a misprint, how could they know what we know? |

Great score, Dwight! I love SG's. My '61 Les Paul/SG Standard was my main working axe from the time I was 19 until I retired it in the late '80's. I played it so much over those years it went through three refrets. I retired it because I was afraid someone might steal it from the clubs I played at. Replaced it with a Peavey T-60 that I modified; I could leave it on stage all week and no one would take it! I had a senior moment two years ago and someone offered me a whole lot of money for the LP/SG, so I sold it. One of the most boneheaded moves I have ever made in my life! |

Stan, I was going to get Gibson to change it to OUR way, before you read that. I mean we are big fans of ol' Riley, we could help a man out?
Herb, your story is one of the saddest ever, worse than Mutt Lange losing his Shania Twain. You took a fine picture with that guitar back in your days of youth, and gave 'er many a good lick, let me re-phrase that, a great playing. I'm sorry that you miss that one too, probably the most special to you, and a very good year! Savor the memories anyhow. |
