Hi all, I have recently purchased the Epi LP Custom pictured below

I'm not sure if the first digit is an 'eye' or a 'one', but the number on the headstock as a whole doesn't seem to jive with what I've read about Epi serial numbers. Do I have a counterfeit in my hands?

Thanks for your help in this,

Jason

Welcome to the forum, Jason! Very Happy It looks like an "I" to me. As far as it being a counterfeit, I wouldn't know why anyone would try to counterfeit a guitar that is already a copy. I doubt it's counterfeit.

Well, when a company copies its own design and leaves out a few details (like what Gibson has done witht he epi LPs), it's a completely different thing from some hack in Korea throwing together a bunch of junk and making sure the looks are right so he can pass it off as legit.

Well, this article kind of got me wondering....I know it's been referenced elsewhere in this forum.

Can anyone else confirm that this is indeed an Epiphone serial number?

Thanks,
Jason

Interesting. It's the first I've heard about it. I still can't imagine why anyone would copy a guitar that doesn't have a terrific resale value. Your serial # has the same amount of numbers as the counterfeit, and that makes it suspect. Did you try calling the 800 number at the bottom of the article?

Not unless the Belgian government has erased my memory and relocated me to Canada to protect me from the dangers inherent to my real identity as a top-level Belgian intelligence operative. I've always wondered why I like chocolate so much....

On another note, my Epi's not a counterfeit! I confirmed the serial number today with Gibson.

Vaarwel,
Jason

The Epiphone serial number decoder currently supports 11 serial number formats from 25 factories. Vintage numbers from 1932 to 1970 are now supported. Serial numbers from 70' and 80's era Epiphone guitars made in Japan are not supported. The reason for this is that there is no reliable documentation from this time period. More information about this can be found in the FAQ. Please post any comments, particularly bugs in the user feedback section.
