I am in the market to buy a new (I mean something made this year) acoustic and looking into getting a Dove. If you have the money to buy one or the Hummingbird or J45, which one would you say is a better value?
I am a Taylor user who currently have a 1970 Dove as a loaner while my Taylor is out for pick up service. |

I'd go with a slope shoulder.... J-45, WM-45, Advanced Jumbo. Or else a Gibson Jumbo-- the trademark!

Dudley, I hate to say this, but everyone's likes and tastes are different. Play as many models as you can, and several of each model. Even in the same model, no two Gibson acoustics will sound identical. That's where they really have it over Taylors. To me All Taylors sound good, but they all sound the same. Each Gibson has it's own personality. Some you'll like, some you won't. It's a personal choice. Besides what better excuse for going out and playing as many different guitars as you can is there? |

The problem I'm having is that I am in a remote area, with no access to new Gibsons other than long distance. As all of you probably know, i am still in a quest for a J200. There are many out there. There's an '89 that is highly touted that is affordable, but do I get that one or spring for a new 2005? Some sellers on ebay are selling new Elite J200s for $2599, which is a crazy (low) price.... but if I don't like it, I'm basically screwed. There was a '64 on ebay that I bid on, ended yesterday, and I only got outbid by $100, and I COULD have have gone back and bid more. It went for $2600, which is on the low side for a '64. The guy was selling it as a '68 but I'm quite sure it was a '64.
There is something to be said for buying a "dream" guitar brand new and having it from Day One, but we're not exactly talking about Bic lighters here. I could get a lemon.
And to complicate matters, I'm wrestling with the thought that I doubt I will ever find another acoustic I like as well as my '64 SJ, and I ask myself "Am I just buying the J200 for status?" |

| I love my sunburst AJ. So pretty, and such a fine player. If you find a well built Gibby, then almost anything goes. I'd love to have a J-200, but maybe next lifetime. |

| there is this J148 sitting in one of the store near me and it was selling for $1350CDN used. I am not quite happy with the sound in comparison to the Dove that I am currently using. Can someone tell me what is a J148, it looks like a miniature jumbo. |

Dudley,
You mentioned the J200 - have you tried a J100 Xtra? I've played several and have been very impressed. Wonderful playability and a really great voice with a solid boom down low and mids/highs that are very well defined. Best of luck with your search!! |

Taylors all do tend to have a bit of a signature Taylor tone to them.... mind ya I love the sound of Taylors and thats why I got myself a 710 a few years ago.
The best advice is definitely to try as many acoustics as you can. When I was in the market for an acoustic, I tried several different brands and several different models of each brand until I settled on my Taylor 710. Personally I did not like the tone of most of the new Gibson's I tried, with the exception of vintage J45s and L00's. Recently tho I tried a new Song Writer Deluxe which I REALLY loved the playability of it and the tone... much mellower then a Taylor.... out of all the Gibson acoustics I've tried I'd take that Song Writer Deluxe... but like Herb said, each person's preferences are different. I am just blessed with the fact that I have a number of big guitar shops within a 2 hour drive of my house so I could try out so many guitars. |

I bought a 710 new in 1989, before Taylor down-sized the body. It will really kick A--. |
