| Uh, that's the only ES series guitar I have. The other two semi hollows are Gretsch and Rickenbacker, and the LeGrand is a big body. The Tele is a solid - but it's double bound, will that count? And the Carvin is a solid body, too. |

| Actually, I meant Herb and Stan were the only ones to sign in. There has to be some more ES owners out there.... |

John Lee Hooker didn't play a Gibson! |

Does anyone know the history of 335's in terms of body shape changes, such as the "ears" being more rounded or pointed, etc? (I've always preferred the sharper shape over the "Mickey Mouse" ears, but wouldn't kick either one outta the studio!)
SA, Didn't know you have a red Lucille as well as the black one. Very nice!
Do you use the Lucilles on stage much?
Herb, that old 355 is the shizzle! And those Fender amps, wow. You sure knew what to hang onto... |

John, I only own a black Lucille. James is the only guy I know with a red one!
Even though I love the tones I can achieve with her, I don't play Lucy on stage much because my soundtechs say she just produces tones with too much bass and midrange, which muddies up the mix. They much prefer thinner, cutting tones (ala Tele) to bring the lead guitar out in front of the mix. Occasionally I get sneak by with a Les Paul, or my SG, but unless we're doing some specific music that requires a semihollowbody, they get all squeamish about it.
And it does pay to keep your soundtechs happy, at least to an extent. After all, they have the final say as to how you sound out front. They do have control of the dreaded Suck fader! |

Stan, I got confused there because you posted a picture of "Neva Marie" on the first page of this thread, and I thought the LP next to it was your "Lester", so I assumed the red Lucille was yours. Was that pic taken at Voodoo's house?
Boy, you're right about the soundman having the "suck fader". Some seem to have it full up at all times
I think some soundmen have a perverse contol issue. They know they've got you, and can make you sound great, or like it's the first time you've had a guitar in your hands. Always be nice to the sound guy, and a couple of beers never hurts....
We've got a sound guy here in Dallas who runs sound for more than one venue, often runs sound at the Guitar Show, etc. He can be working with a system that has 5 times the power and size necessary for the venue, but always pushes it to the point of clipping. Guess he wants us all to be as deaf as he obviously is... |

I've run sound for a lot of years and I never had any problem with humbucker guitars "muddying up the mix". It takes a little effort, but the "mud" can be avoided and a 335 or 355 sounds beautiful in the mix and stands out as well as any single coil guitar. Sounds to me like your sound guys are just lazy control freaks. If they're not, then they're incompetent. Sorry to sound harsh, especially about church guys; but it is what it is. |

I hesitated to say anything about that, not knowing the circumstances, but I too had to wonder why your soundmen couldn't make your Gibby cut thru the mix.
And, uh, didn't know it was a church gig.....sorry about the beer offering to the soundguy comment.
Stan, don't you play blues gigs as well? Is that problem confined to the church gig, or do you get that complaint w/other soundmen? Sumpthin' just ain't right there... |

335 owners??? Oh... Here I am... 2001 335 (with build in delaminations...) and 1960 330 (with build in top quality) ...
I am a HUGE fan of 330s. They sound incredible and real vintage 330s can still be bought for a lot less than 335s of equal vintage and LPs as well. Old P-90s are tremendously sounding pickups played thru a Super Reverb. Most people think that 330s are prone to feed back - but they take a lot of volume before they go mad 330s came out of the production line side by side the 335s - they actually share most body parts as well - including the internal scored bracings glued to the inside of the top (the piece that have contact with the centerblocks of 335s... 330s are nice guitars and with EXCELLENT build quality at a level no longer found in any modern Gibson - custom shop guitars included I'm afraid. |
