Greetings from a newbie!: Opinions of the Honky tonk deuce?

I'm checking out the signature series and darn it, aside from that too big pickguard the Deuce is whispering the most interesting suggestions into my right ear ( that's the side my wallet is on). Has anybody out there touched one or played one? I would be most grateful for insight.

Welcome, Dutch! I don't know anything about that one, but I'd reccommend taking a test drive to see if she sings to you.

I dunno. What does it cost? Since it is a signature then you may be paying more. It has the same scale size as the J-45 or the Southern Jumbo. Go with rosewood on the J-45 and you seem to have a pretty even match between all three guitars. I'd compare all three if I were you and go for the best bang for the buck. But, since I am not you I bought me an Advanced Jumbo--the acoustic cannon. I love my AJ! Cool

Yoder, I have that in my signature line because that's the type of music I play, and I love it. But I must warn you, if you put in Patridge Family or Monkees song lines in yours, you're on your own! I won't do anything, but some of the other folks might not enjoy those tunes stuck in their heads, and I won't be responsible for their reactions!! Wink

Well, of course both Herb and Yoder make good points. If I could find one I would surely play it, and certainly the deuce appears to be naught ( as in DREAD- naught teehee) but a glorified rosewood j45. I did play a rosey j45 at the shop, and the tone had it all over my taylor 510, but was not as deep as a guild d55 they had on hand for about the same dough. Still, the guild is too flashy. I mean, racing stripes on the fretboard is a bit much. I guess I'll shop a bit, but gee, if they only make 200 deuces its likely I'll have to make a downpayment to get one to a shop. Anyway, thanks for the input.

Yea, I am in a strange fix right now. I have a 2002 Taylor 710 Ltd. (that I got for a ridiculously low price--have made a lot of purchases from the guy), and I do not play it at all except when I open the case and do a humidity check. I have probably played it a total of 20 hours. The reason I do not play it is because my Gibson AJ just blows it out of the water. The Taylor is pretty, but if it goes unused then why keep it? I have been working with the dealer I got it from and he has offered me a pretty good, but not great, deal on trading it in for a Hamer Korina Artist. With what I paid for the Taylor + the $100 trade in, then I will end up paying about $300 hundred more for the Hamer than the cheapest price I could find on the Internet, and about $500 less than MSRP. Unfortunately, he only carries Hamer, Ibanez, Brian Moore, and a few G&L's Tributes. The Hamer is nice and the sound has been compared to be a cross between a Tele and a Gibson 335. The Hamer is a hand-carved semi-hollow. Shocked

Hmm, I guess all of this meandering is merely my way of trying to convince myself to trade it in tomorrow. Oh, lives problems! Confused

Sorry to steal your thunder Dutch, but woe is me! I just need an outlet. This morning I picked up my car from the shop. ABS went out $1800! #Mad

Mmmm, Hamer. Didn't Martin Lancelot Barre of Tull play a Hamer? Nice guitar. Congrats! No thunder to steal, just looking for insights. ABS gone, huh? I purposely pulled the fuse on my abs's: I HATE the way the car handles when they self tap. I just put a piece of electrical tape over the dashboard idiot light and go my way. Hmmm, maybe if I put a piece of masking tape over the headstock of the 510 and scrawl "gibson" on it in crayon I too could save much bucks. Thinking, thinking......Naw!

Oh Yeah, the brakes still work! The abs system is just an add on electric/computer gizmo that "enhances" the braking. The brakes always work, even if the car is not running, due to the science of hydraulics and fear of lawsuits by the car companies. If you pull the fuse for the abs, you still have brakes, but without the idiotic tapping that frankly scares the hell out of me and makes me think the brakes are not doing their job. Do this: park your car on a slight down hill slope, put the key on ignition so you can put her in neutral, and roll a bit. then depress the brake pedal. you'll see you stop, but the brakes will be spongy because the engine is not running so the "power" brakes are not engaged. the abs is separete from the power. pull the abs fuse and you still have pwer breakes when the engine is running. at least on a chevy s10. I am confident it is universal. free yourself from that anoyying tapping! Have a seat opn the group w bench next to me. question authority!!! Play Gibson!!

Hmm...Well here is what happened: they said the gears of the "pump" went out. Is this "pump" part of the ABS system only or is it part of the master cylinder? Seems to me it is the ABS system only--the part that pumps the brakes. If just ABS, then I shall pull the fuse next time. Confused

I'm inclined to think it is just the abs elecrtic pump. the mastercylinder is power aided but works regardless if the pedal is depressed, so yeah, i'd just pull the fuse and test to see if it still pumps or not. you'll know right away if the regular brake pump is effected, as the brakes will be a bit spongier before really taking effect . By the way, don't try it with a gibson guitar in the back seat Very Happy

Thanks Dutch, I already paid for the repairs but you can bet that I will begin pulling fuses. I will test drive on the flat lands rather than take a joy ride up Pikes Peak. Very Happy

I played one last week. Sounded great. I had never played a gibson acoustic before, but I am in the market for a new acoustic and my local music shop had a used Honky Tonk Deuce. I could do without the pickguard, too, but the guitar sounded great. Really nice balance and it felt really solid. I'm actually considering buying this thing, from the 5 minutes I had alone with it. I'd like to compare this one to a regular old J45 before I make a decision. Anyway, this seems like a solid guitar. What is the general feeling on the signature series models? Is quality consistently good on these?
