After reading Voodoo say he only plays his guitars in t-shirts and sweats, I felt a little better, as I'm just as picky about my guitars these days. I have all my Gibsons in my home studio, so when I go in to play, I'm dressed for it. (I take it one step farther and wear only long sleeve T's so I minimize how much skin touches the finish)

I like to keep a guitar by my chair in the living room to noodle while watching the tube. I wanted a guitar like a 335 that had a little acoustic quality so I could hear it, and wanted something that I didn't have to worry about being so careful with.

I've long heard that the 335 style Epi's were the best thing they make, and after hearing Voodoo sing their praises, I bought a white Sheraton off ebay for $400. I own 2 Gibson 335's, one a Custom Shop, and while I'm not suggesting that this Epi is a Gibby, I'm shocked at how good it is. I've only heard it acoustically and thru my SansAmp/headphones, but this thing plays and sounds great.

I had never played one of these before, but now I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone wanting an affordable alternative to a Gibson 335. Makes me wonder how good the other Epi's are...

Yah mon, I can double ditto that!

I've had a couple of Sheratons, and they are just pretty fine guitars in their own rite. If you upgrade their electronics, you've got probably 90% (IMHO) of the tone of any good 335. If you put on a good nut, and some decent tuners, you'll have an axe worthy of any gig.

I am very impressed with the build quality on those, when you weigh that against their price.

The only thing you won't have is that spendy Gibson logo on the headstock, and so you won't have the approval of any gear snobs who happen to be there! Laughing

I read an article on Duke Robillard last year in GP where he said he never goes into the studio without his Epiphone Sheraton. That's a pretty good endorsement. Cool

I haven't played any of the other Epi models (yet), but I have read very good reviews on them from credible sources.

Play on,
Stan

Who says hollowbodys can't rock. I just saw Beatles footage of them playing Revolution. John was playing the distorted intro on his Sheraton, or was that a Casino? Either way, it's all good..........

Well...yeah....but let's be honest about this. The Epi's that the Beatles played were not the same guitars available now. At least not the standard Chinese built ones. Todays instruments a decent entry level guitars that can be upgraded to intermediate level. The Beatles guitars were an entirely diffent grade altogether, they just look very similar.

When Beatles got theirs it was entry level guitars as well - the cheapest semis from Kalamazoo (Except the Casino 230T which was the same but with only one pickup...). Still they were of very high build quality. It was so (quoting Ted McCarthy in Dusschoirs book on electric Gibsons from the golden years) that the best wood was picked for 355/345... then the 335 line was supplied and finally the 330/Casino line. But even so these cheap guitars was quality build and from fine materials indeed. It's very easy to see when inspectioning the inside of a 330 with mirror and light Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy For instance the bracing is at least grade AA quartersawn spruce whereas the necks are steady quatersawn mahogany and nicely selected rosewood for the fingerboards.

So last night I was looking for this "tone," you know what I mean? I took out my Sheraton, and she nailed it. I go through this a lot, chasing down some elusive tone in my head, and sometimes I get out numerous guitars and use several amps looking for it. But last night the Sheraton satisfied! Cool
