I dunno, that may very well be. I've taken the back off my Lucille and looked at it, and it looks like a wiring nightmare! I really can't tell you though, if it is a true bypass when in Position One. I do like the tones I can get in Position One, but I don't know if they are affected by the circuit! Cool

ACCORDING TO THE GIBSON REP I TALKED TO IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE A TRUE BYPASS.( but he could be jiving too)

I too have opened that RATS NEST and have no desire to have to work in there !!!!!

I'll admit there are a lot of tones that are just unusable but then there are some that sound just perfect....personally I like the one on my BLUESHAWK better...maybe it's got something to do with the P-90's????

Well true bypass and is different then no switch at all. The switch itself is what adds the capacitance and some resistance that was not there in the wire. That's really the whole point. The switch in the middle of the wire changes the tone. Especially a turn/click switch with contacts vs a DPDT toggel switch. It can get sort of complicated to explain and above my ability to explain it, while I understand the basic concepts of it. Any component in the audio path alters the tone. A switch has resistance, but capacitance too. What do we know about Caps? They are filters. They are used to drain off frequencies. Some filter off lows and other filters hights. So even if it is the smallest of capacitances, it will filter off some tone.

I havn't tried the Custom one, have the classic and think it's a really nice guitar. When it was new the bridge pickup had a real dirty break-up sound as you cranked it up, as it's aged a bit it seems to sound "normal" - weird...

I'd suggest you try both, I think the Custom looks a lot better. I have a guitar (chinese LP bolt neck copy) with a vairtone on it and it's nice to have built in tone options...

I think its a sweet guitar. I own one and play solo jazz. I think the pups are a bit hot for finger style playing, but with a few adjustments I've been able to get the tones I want. You can always replace the pickups, but spend some time with them first- they really do produce some very nice clean tones!
