| Hey Ajay, we were discussing pick-ups somewhere around here. Since you have pretty much every p/u and every style guitar, how would YOU describe the Gibson P-90's compared to their humbuckers. You said you liked the Pauls with them. |

Its a little while now since I've played the P90 equiped LPs, but from memeory, the P90s are a bit darker, with more bite, than the HBs LPs.
Still more output than a normal single coil, but not as big and round a sound. |

Hey Voodoo!
The LP Special does have P90s, but they are aftermarket ones...the guy who owned it before me put in Harmonic Design V/P90s, which are supposed to be the ant's pants.
They certainly sound great!'
Oh yeah, I have one of these....

FDIREDUDE,
I have LONG been a LOVER of P-90's and especially in LES PAULS.
DID ya know that when the BLACK BEAUTY came out there was a WHITE BEAUTY???
It was the FIRST LES PAUL CUSTOM WITH 3 P-90's in it according to LES PAUL in the DVD CHASING THE SOUND there were LESS than 75 of em made !!!!!
If ya look today the LES PAUL BFG comes with a P90 in the NECK and a BURSTBUCKER PRO IN THE BRIDGE !!!!
IT IS ALSO THE ONE PLAYER LES PAUL I KEPT WHEN I SOLD 18 OF MY PAULS OFF !!!!!!
SO THAT SHOULD GIVE YA A HINT OF WHERE THE TONE WITH A P-90 RANKS IN LES PAULS !!!!
The tone of the two of these great pups combined have made it my NUMBER 1 GO TO LES PAUL FOR VERSATILITY AND TONE !!!!!
FOR years GUYS LOVED the LES PAUL SPECIALS with there P-90's but in the 90's Gibson went to what they thought would be better the P-100 a humbucker P-90....IT DID NOT SOUND AS GOOD !!!
SO soon GIBSON came back with those CHEAPO FADED DC ax's with
P-90's !!!!
They had em in the BLUESHAWKS but discontinued them and the FIREBIRD's in the 60's with P-90s were the BEST SOUNDING FIREBIRD's EVER !!!!
What became the norm was installing P-90's into the cavities of LES PAUL DELUXES with those NASTY GARBAGE MINI HUMBUCKERS !@!!!!
I HATE THOSE PUPS TO MANY HIGHS AND THEY SOUND LIKE THEY ARE SHREIKING !!!!
FINALLY the SG came back in recent years with P-90's when the one that was played by PETER TOWNSEND in the early days of the WHO had P-90s in em from day one...
BASICALLY and accoring once again to LES PAUL from the DVD CHASING THE SOUND......even though the HUMBUCKER is and was the newest STANDARD in pickups in his heart (AND MINE) the P-90 will always be the pickup of choice !!!!
They also had a LIMITED RUN OF ES-335 with surface mounted P-90's WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOOWOWOW
Like a NEW ES-330....I wish I had bought one of those as playing my
ES-330 is always RISKY .....being totally stock and original I would hate for something to happen !!!!
NOTHING TO ME SOUNDS BETTER THAN A 56 RE-ISSUE with those SOAP BAR P-90's in it...the BEST BLUES SOUNDING LES PAUL YET !!!!!!
PLus remember those GREAT SOUNDING JR"S AND MELODY MAKERS WHEN THEY TOO WERE P-90 EQUIPPED....I think GIBSON surely got it's money's worth when designing the P-90 !!!!
THAT"S MY OPINION !!!!
Voodoo
I LIKE PEOPLE BUT HATE ROBOTS !!!!!
DO YOU REALLY LIKE THAT THING AJAY?????? OR IS IT AN INVESTMENT? |

Uh... I'll take that last post as read.
In answer to your question, I am a collector of guitars and the First Production run of the Robot will, I believe, be collectable in the future.
It will either be collectable as the first of a new geenration
OR
It will be collectable as a dismal failure of trying to apply new "wiz-bang" technology to an already proven technology.
I am tending towards the latter view.
My Robot, which I bought from a Gibson dealer online, came to me completely unplayable as it obviously had not even been setup at the factory. It was so bad that the Tuning system doesn't even work properly. The culprit is a CONVEX neck setup. I haven't had the time to set it up myself as yet, so the guitar doesn't get played.
What a piece of crap.
But collectable... |

Update on the ROBOT.
After giving the ROBOT a serve this morning, I thought the least I could do was adjust the truss rod and see if the thing would "come alive".
Well, lo and behold, it DID! With a neck adjusted to have a concave profile (as opposed to the convex one as supplied from Gibson), the ROBOT tuning system does work and work quite well indeed!
So a correction is in order. The ROBOT guitar is not crap, just the factory that didn't both to set it up prior to delivery the the client (me). |

Well, I suppose I should finish up showing my Gibsons...
Here's a recent arrival, a 335 Dot RI
And lastly, an Angus Young Signature SG

Ajay, that 335 is awsome!!!
Voodoo, basically, I'm looking for a Gibson that will give me more clean tone with my 15 watt Crate Palomino amp. The humbuckers in my 137 don't get me much. Will a p90 be slower to break up? What would you suggest? Also, the p/u in that Melody Maker is a p90? The lit on it just says "single coil". I think you posted a Voodoo review a while back and said you really liked that axe. The BFG looks cool too. That combination looks great. |

Ajay, the Angus looks mean, just like it should. And your ES-335 is a beautiful thing. The subtle flame in it really glows, and I'm sure it's much better in person!
Play on,
Stan |

I discovered a new use for the ROBOT.
It's a great way to get musicians to go "ooh aah". In spite of the fact that most still make noises about "how do you tune up during a song" or whatever, everyone is fascinated when those tuning heads are rotating by themselves and making that electronic whirring sound... |
